Between Ordin and the cold worlds, the system stops being a map. Karth Field is not a belt: a belt has a plane, lanes, and a rhythm that can be charted and then trusted. This has none of that. Rock from gravel to mountain, tumbling on no schedule anyone has finished writing down, drifting into lanes that were clear the last time somebody looked.
It has never been fully surveyed. Every attempt has produced a document that expired before it was filed. Sensors inside the field are worse than useless, returning thousands of contacts, none of them threats and every one of them a return. Crews who work the edge shut the targeting suite down and fly on nav and eyes, because a system screaming about everything tells you nothing.
No capital ship has ever crossed it. The hulls that hold this system together are too large to thread rock that moves, and armor rated against a rail burst does nothing about a mountain arriving sideways. Routes exist around the field, above and below the worst of it, and they are slow, expensive in reaction mass, and visible from a very long way off.

The Authority's position is that the field holds no strategic value. Nothing inside it is worth the hull it would cost to reach, no fixed installation of consequence has ever been confirmed within it, and the volume is too large and too disordered for a picket to mean anything. Transit is prohibited for reasons of navigational safety, and the prohibition has never required enforcement.

It sits across the natural line between the inner system and the outer reaches, and it cannot be crossed by anything large enough to impose an outcome on the far side.
