Third orbit. The survey found a dry world with a thin atmosphere and dust plains that went on for hundreds of kilometers. Nothing about it looked dangerous.
There were scars on the surface. Long dark tracks, cold and old, cutting across the basins. They went into the report as past volcanism.
The dust on Rylos is combustible. When a storm lifts enough of it and something provides the spark, the cloud ignites. What comes across the plains is a wall of burning air carrying molten glass at the speed of the wind. It goes where the storm goes. It stops when the fuel runs out. The storms are rare enough that a survey can miss them entirely, and the fire is nearly the color of the ground.
